To celebrate Chinese New Year we have been making money wallets, dragon masks, writing Chinese numerals and much more. We had a lovely theatre performance entitled ‘The Magic Paintbrush’ by the Theatre Tots. The children had so much fun getting involved in the adventure during the workshops.
This term reception are learning all about Traditional stories. We have been reading stories such as ‘Goldilocks and The Three Bears’ and ‘The Gingerbread Man’. We have also been learning about multi-cultural stories from around the world such as ‘Handa’s Surprise’. During the Application Focus Weeks we have been looking at keeping ‘Fit For Life’; exercise and healthy eating.
The activities we have been taking part in, include:
- Looking at the similarities between the stories we are reading
- Writing simple sentences about the stories
- Role-playing the story using props and masks
- Looking at adding the sugars in our snacks and how to be sugar smart
- Making a healthy plate using lots of different media and materials
- Visiting Deptford market to shop for fruits
- Making fruit salads
What’s to come?
The second part of Spring Term we will be learning all about the topic ‘Growing’ through stories such as ‘Jack and the Beanstalk’ and ‘Oliver’s Vegetables’. We will be planting our very own beanstalks and much more!

As we come to the end of another amazing term in Reception, we continue to make learning fun in our own unique way.
This term we learned about People who help us - Our Superheroes. This was a great way to get to know the persons in our community who serve to make it a better place. We learned all about their jobs and even gave thought about what we want to be when we grow up. Most of us will probably still be superheroes when its night time…Shhh please don’t reveal our secret identities.
We are now getting ready for Christmas and boy is it busy! Quickly approaching is our Christmas performance “Born in a Barn”. This will be taking place on the 13th Dec at 2:30pm. Come and watch the animals celebrate a new arrival in the barn. We are also busy making our special items to be sold at this year’s Winter Fayre.
This has been a fun-filled term; we can’t wait until next term when we will be learning lots of Traditional and Multi-cultural stories. We look forward to our visit from Theatre Tots, coming to put on the Chinese New Year show called “The Magic Paintbrush”, we will also be visiting the rangers at Maryon Wilson farm and walking to our local library.
Please visit our site to look at pictures of our learning.
Bye for now!

Hello and Welcome to Reception B!
Our Class Teacher is Mrs Waterman and the Teaching Assistant is Mr Phillip.
In Reception we have a lovely open-plan classroom where we learn through play. Our framework is called the ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ and our teachers use the ‘Development Matters’ document to teach and assess us. Our adults are very helpful and we enjoy moving from indoors to outdoors as we access our learning. We engage in a number of activities from sand and water to construction toys and home-corner fun, puzzles, transport and dressing up. Through these fun activities, we learn all 7 areas of learning: Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal Social and Emotional Development, Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World and Expressive Arts and Design.
In Reception, our learning takes place in many different ways. From Child-led activities, child-initiated, adult-led, adult–initiated and independent activities. It is just so amazing how much fun learning can be!
Each term we do a new topic. Some of our favourite topics include ‘People Who Help Us’, ‘Minibeasts’, ‘Growing’ and ‘Under the Sea’. We enjoy going on trips and visits to new and exciting places as well as welcoming visitors into our school.
Next time you visit Lucas Vale, pop in and say hello to us, we will happily tell you all about what we are learning on that day.
See you soon!
