Keep up to date with what's going on in Year 6 by checking here regularly. We will be adding news and photos of our work and activities on a regular basis.

The Spring Term 2017 is here!
We would like to wish all of our parents, carers and children, a very Happy New Year!!

Practice makes perfect!!
We have been impressed by the consistent effort, of all our children, across the curriculum and would like to congratulate them, for making such a promising start to their final year at Lucas Vale Primary School.

In literacy, each set is given a list of spellings to practise on a weekly basis. We would like to suggest that in addition to this, the children have the opportunity to practice the words allocated to Years 3 and 4, alongside the age-related words for Years 5 and 6.

Please lookout for a hand out with these words on that has been given to the children.

Our reading focus this term is ‘The London Eye Mystery’ by Sibhoan Dowd. Year 6 visited the London Eye where they experienced what Salim (one of the central characters of the book) must have felt like.

Useful Websites
The school subscribes to MyMaths and Espresso which provide a really helpful range of games, activities, hints and tips. The children should all be aware of their login details but if they forget, please get in touch with their teacher. Our subscription terms and conditions do not allow us to post these details online.

In the run up to National Curriculum tests, the BBC Bitesize website provides a huge range of games, activities and quizzes from Key Stage 1 right up to GCSE level.

The Homework Help section from the award winning Woodlands Junior School website contains lots of games and activities to help you with all areas of the curriculum and especially English and Maths.

Other sites include ict games provides a range of activities and games to help with literacy and numeracy skills. The site does contain adverts. The Topmarks website contains a dedicated parents section as well as a wealth of ideas and resources for all areas of the curriculum. Like the Topmarks website, Crickweb contains a large range of resources and activities for all subjects across the curriculum.

Useful Resources
Multiplication tables grids provide a quick and easy way for children to practice their multiplication facts. They can be easily folded so that the answers are hidden and children can work together or with adults to point at questions randomly then recall the answers.

Thank you for your support.

Welcome to the Year 6 blog. Find out what our class has been up to lately!

We have had an amazing half term so far. Our trip to Chislehurst Caves was amazing. The children had the opportunity to explore different aspects around WW2. Furthermore, our trip to Kidzania was a unique event; a chance for our children to think about their future and take part in doing different jobs such as: musicians, accountants, entrepreneurs and many more.

During our ‘World War 2’ topic we experienced what life was like for evacuees. We used freeze frames to depict emotions and were given different roles such as evacuee children, host families and billeting officers to act out through drama. This helped us to imagine what it would have been like living through these difficult times. We followed this up by using our speaking and listening skills to have a debate about whether being an evacuee was a positive or negative experience. In order to consolidate our learning we will visit Horton Kirby where the children will take part in a host of activities linked to WW2.

Thank you to parents/carers for their continuing support.

  • Historical Fiction-War Horse

We will be focusing on planning, editing and improving, sentence structure and expanded content. Our English sessions will be mainly book-based, beginning with Boy in The Striped Pyjamas. Using this as a stimulus, we will create writing opportunities based upon the objectives of Year 6. In Guided Reading, we will be looking at narrative, and non-fiction texts, with a focus on comprehension. To help children to independently develop their comprehension skills we will provide you with a list of suggested questions that match their reading level.
