Year 5 visit to Houses of Parliament

Created Tuesday 7th June

13 Year 5 students visited the Houses of Parliament. We were not allowed to photograph the House of Commons or the Lords and other interesting areas which was a shame, but it was a very interesting as well as informative trip and we all enjoyed it. You could really feel the history of building.

Did you know that at one time The Houses of Parliament burnt down due to over packing of wood in a fireplace under Parliament. The attendant left the fire unattended even though he was told not to. Parliament is only about 150 years old.

Careers Day

Created Thursday 5th September

On Friday 23rd October 2015, the Grinling Gibbons and Lucas Vale Federation held its ‘Careers Day’ event at Deptford Green Secondary School.

Objectives for the day included:

  • Students to gain insight into career options
  • Students to begin to understand the difference between having a job, a career and a profession.
  • University? Vocation pathway? Apprenticeship? – Students to have awareness of a range of opportunities and the different routes and life skills needed to realise their chosen career; and
  • Most specifically, across the day, to involve the students in a process that would help them to develop a platform for their future success by embracing the value of ‘learning is for life’

Reach Society worked with the Federation to design, develop and roll out this extra-ordinary event for over four hundred students. Reach Society provided a cohort of almost 30 professionals comprising role models, exhibitors and leaders of themed workshops!

Role Models (background)

  • Law
  • Music
  • Medicine
  • Company Secretary
  • Marketing and Promotions
  • London Underground
  • Automotive Engineering
  • Architecture
  • Fire Service

Exhibitors (background)

  • Banking
  • Services suppliers
  • Energy suppliers
  • Skills training
  • IT
  • Business Consultancy
  • Support Systems

  • Understanding work, profession and career
  • Pathways to success via the workplace
  • Why are life skills necessary?

Concluding the day, more than 450 comments were provided by the young people aged 10 and 11 years, from four primary schools (Grinling Gibbons, Lucas Vale, Adamsrill and Deptford Park).

The young people were invited to provide feedback in a few key areas such as what they enjoyed and did not enjoy; what they learnt, whether the experience made them think about their future; and would they recommend the day to others.

The vast majority of young people (96%) indicated that they would recommend the day; whereas fewer than one in 20 (4%) would not.

Similarly, the vast majority of the young people (94%) stated that the experience made them think about their future; whereas slightly more than one in 20 (6%) were not moved to think about their future.

Of the nominal 450 comments slightly less than one in three (31%) of the comments was about “things enjoyed on the day”; slightly more than one in four (27%) of them was about “things learnt on the day”; and one in four (25%) of them was about “things least enjoyed on the day.”

Cookathon Mania!

Created Friday 13th March

On Wednesday 11th March, our class went to our local secondary school (Addeys and Stanhope) to take part in a magnificent cookathon.

It was absolutely amazing. When we arrived, we were taken to the food technology room where we were met by some wonderful year nine pupils. They helped us to cook a wonderful meal (chicken, vegetarian or duck biryani).

We started by chopping up the ingredients. We used really sharp knives, similar to the ones our parents use in our kitchens at home, but we were shown how to use them safely. Once we had finished chopping, we washed the vegetables and the meat and then began frying them both. Soon after, we boiled the rice. Once the rice was cooked, we added all of the ingredients into the frying pan and mixed them up. The whole speedy process took around 40 minutes.

Once we got back to school, we were able to tuck into our tasty, delicious meals. Bliss!

If you would like to cook this tasty meal or any others as they have quite a few, check the cookathon website at: http://www.letsgetcooking.org.uk/list
